Description:

Education is undergoing a paradigm shift, and on May 2nd, Somerville School NOIDA took a proactive step in navigating this transition. The school organised an insightful workshop for Class IX parents, students and teachers, focusing on the implementation of the new curriculum under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023.

The session commenced with an address by the Principal, Mrs M.N Arul Raj,  who emphasised the urgency of these reforms. With significant changes projected for the Class X curriculum in the coming year, the Principal stressed that immediate implementation at the Class IX level is essential for a seamless transition. The core message was clear: education is moving away from rote memorisation toward Competency-Based Education (CBE).

One of the primary highlights of the workshop was the detailed overview of the revamped academic structure. Parents were introduced to the nuanced categorisation of compulsory subjects, including the distinction between Mathematics and Mathematics Advanced, as well as Science and Science Advanced.

A significant addition to the mainstream curriculum is the 6th compulsory subject: Vocational Education. This initiative aims to equip students with practical, industry-relevant skills early in their academic journey. Furthermore, the importance of "Internal Subjects" was reaffirmed, focusing on: Art Education, Health and Physical Education and Work Experience.

The workshop moved beyond traditional subjects to discuss the integration of Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence across the board. Teachers from the English, Hindi, Maths, Science and Social Science departments gave detailed presentations on how their respective fields will now transform in accordance with the new curriculum.

The curriculum is also deeply rooted in identity and ethics. The NCF 2023 weaves several cross-cutting themes into daily lessons: Indian Knowledge System (IKS), Gender Sensitivity, Values and Ethics and Cultural Heritage. The shift focuses on evaluating a student’s ability to apply knowledge in real-world scenarios rather than just recalling facts.

The workshop concluded with a  Q&A session where parents’ queries regarding subject choices, the rigour of advanced levels, and the future of board exams were addressed by the faculty.
